Yuriorkis Gamboa is bringing an Olympic resume and a long pro-boxing career into the BKB Trigon at BKB 58 in Miami on August 29. And a quick update: his opponent is now confirmed as Nicaragua\u2019s Yesner \u201cCuajadita\u201d Talavera, with both men set to make their bare-knuckle debuts.<\/p>\n
Gamboa, 44, was born in Guant\u00e1namo, Cuba, on December 23, 1981. Known as \u201cEl Cicl\u00f3n de Guant\u00e1namo,\u201d he became one of Cuba\u2019s leading amateur boxers before heading into the professional game. His story began early. Gamboa has recalled telling his father at age nine that he dreamed of becoming an Olympic champion. Fifteen years later, he delivered.<\/p>\n
At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Gamboa won flyweight gold for Cuba at 51 kilograms. His run included victories over Moldova\u2019s Igor Samoilenco, Thailand\u2019s Somjit Jongjohor, Russia\u2019s Georgy Balakshin and Germany\u2019s Rustamhodza Rahimov. In the final, he beat France\u2019s J\u00e9r\u00f4me Thomas 38-23 to claim the top prize. He had already won gold at the 2003 Pan American Games and later added a bronze medal at the 2005 World Championships, this time at featherweight.<\/p>\n
Gamboa\u2019s amateur background was built on fast hands, footwork and timing, all skills that could look very different without gloves. BKB has leaned into that idea while promoting the Miami appearance, saying, \u201cReal boxing skill in bare knuckle is a deadly weapon.\u201d The question on August 29 will be how his movement and punch selection translate inside the promotion\u2019s three-sided Trigon.<\/p>\n
After turning professional in 2007, Gamboa moved quickly. He won the WBA featherweight title in 2009, then unified it with the IBF belt by defeating Orlando Salido by unanimous decision in 2010. He became the first Cuban boxer to win an IBF world championship, and his WBA status was elevated to unified champion after the Salido victory. His pro run included wins over Daniel Ponce de Le\u00f3n, Rogers Mtagwa, Jorge Sol\u00eds, Michael Farenas and Darleys P\u00e9rez.<\/p>\n
The Cuban veteran built a 23-0 record before meeting Terence Crawford for the WBO lightweight title in 2014. Crawford stopped him in the ninth round after scoring knockdowns in the fifth and eighth. Gamboa stayed active at a high level afterward, fighting Gervonta Davis for the WBA lightweight title in 2019 and Devin Haney for the WBC lightweight title in 2020. Davis stopped him in the 12th round, while Haney won a 12-round decision.<\/p>\n
Now comes a fresh chapter in Miami. BKB 58 is scheduled for the James L. Knight Center, with heavyweight champion Gustavo Trujillo facing Mark O\u2019Neil in the featured matchup. Gamboa-Talavera is listed at super lightweight, giving the Olympic champion a new platform for a career that has already traveled from Guant\u00e1namo to Athens, world-title boxing and, next, bare knuckle.<\/p>\n
