{"id":26906,"date":"2026-09-07T07:39:55","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T07:39:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mmaallout.com\/?p=26906"},"modified":"2026-09-07T07:39:55","modified_gmt":"2026-09-07T07:39:55","slug":"i-just-walked-into-a-black-belt-division-won-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mmaallout.com\/?p=26906","title":{"rendered":"I Just Walked Into A Black Belt Division &#038; Won It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Josh Barnett has spent his career bouncing between the UFC heavyweight title and pro wrestling rings, but tucked into his resume is a piece of grappling trivia most competitors would never dream of pulling off.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Back in 2009, he entered the black belt division at the IBJJF No-Gi World Championships despite having no BJJ competition history, no lineage on file, and no black belt awarded by any instructor whatsoever.<br \/>And, well, he won it!<\/p>\n<p>According to Barnett, the entire adventure began as nothing more than talking a friend into competing:<\/p>\n<p>I did it on a whim too because I did it to get my buddy Victor Webster to compete.<br \/>Because he was acting and doing all this stuff and I\u2019m like: \u201cBro, you are good enough that you could medal out here. You should go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Webster wasn\u2019t going alone, though:<\/p>\n<p>He goes: \u201cI\u2019ll do it if you\u2019ll do it. And I\u2019m, like, come on.\u201d<br \/>So I\u2019m already out here coaching people whatever. So I was like \u2013 fine.<\/p>\n<p>From there, Barnett got himself added to the bracket on short notice, jumped off a flight straight from pro wrestling commitments in Japan, and showed up with barely any preparation behind him:<\/p>\n<p>I flew in from doing pro wrestling in Japan and did, you know, did some working out and then showed up on Sunday and beat everybody.<\/p>\n<p>The real oddity of it all was that Barnett had no actual rank in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to begin with:<\/p>\n<p>The very next year, you get what I\u2019ve heard called the \u201cBarnett rule\u201d in IBJJF.<\/p>\n<p>So now you have to register your black belt and all that. Because I had no belt.<br \/>I was not a black belt under anyone.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t even come from jiu-jitsu.
