{"id":31702,"date":"2026-10-07T21:33:25","date_gmt":"2026-10-07T21:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mmaallout.com\/?p=31702"},"modified":"2026-10-07T21:33:25","modified_gmt":"2026-10-07T21:33:25","slug":"malcolm-wellmaker-left-home-to-revive-his-ufc-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mmaallout.com\/?p=31702","title":{"rendered":"Malcolm Wellmaker left home to revive his UFC career"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">One year ago, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Bantamweight prospect, <strong>Malcolm Wellmaker<\/strong>, looked like one of the promotion\u2019s next breakout stars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cThe Machine\u201d was coming off consecutive highlight-reel, first round knockouts over <strong>Cameron Saaiman<\/strong> and <strong>Kris Moutinho<\/strong> (watch highlights), seemingly announcing himself as a serious threat at 135 pounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Then, one month later, all that momentum came to a screeching halt inside Madison Square Garden. Indeed, Wellmaker suffered the first loss of his professional career, dropping a unanimous decision to <strong>Ethyn Ewing<\/strong>, who accepted the fight on just 48 hours\u2019 notice (details here).<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">In hindsight, the loss hasn\u2019t aged badly whatsoever \u2014 Ewing might just be the real deal. At the time, though, Wellmaker\u2019s considerable hype took a hit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">The setback stung, but because of the chaotic circumstances surrounding it, Wellmaker could explain it away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cFor the Ethyn loss, I had redeeming excuses \u2014 multiple opponent changes, then a new one on 48 hours\u2019 notice. The weight cut was rough, all that stuff,\u201d Wellmaker told MMAMania.com in a recent interview. \u201cSo, I had things I could point to. But with Juan, brother, I had six months. No name changes. It was just him, and I still fell short. That was what put everything in perspective for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Six months after losing to Ewing, Wellmaker suffered his second consecutive defeat, submitting to UFC newcomer, <strong>Juan Diaz<\/strong>, in the second round (see that again here).<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">After beginning his UFC career with two spectacular knockouts, Wellmaker was suddenly 2-2 inside the Octagon. In my heart, I felt like I let all the elements outside of the fight mess with my head, and that\u2019s what impacted my performance. I walked away from that experience still feeling like I was world championship material.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cBut, when I lost to Juan Diaz, 100 percent, there was a big hit to my confidence,\u201d he continued. \u201cThere was a big hit to my belief in my skills and my potential, and the whispers started getting louder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Wellmaker knew something had to change if he was going to turn his promising career around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">That realization forced the proud Augusta, Ga., native to make one of the most difficult decisions of his life: leave his friends, family and long-time team behind to begin training at American Top Team in Florida.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cIt was incredibly hard, man,\u201d Wellmaker said. \u201cI think a lot of people don\u2019t realize how hard it was because I made the move so fast. I had a conversation with my wife first \u2014 just letting out my thoughts, venting, being honest and addressing some things. After that, I reached out to my management. That was the Sunday and Monday after my fight. I immediately started asking for their thoughts on my career, my performance and what was next for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">The answer became painfully obvious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Wellmaker had reached UFC while training with the same people who had helped him from the very beginning. But, competing against the best Bantamweights in the world \u2014 while working with limited resources \u2014 was no longer sustainable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Once he made his decision, Wellmaker had to tell the people who had helped get him there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cMy coaches and teammates were already thinking, \u2018Okay, what can we do better? Who can we bring into camp? How can we make sure he\u2019s better prepared for his next fight?\u2019\u201d Wellmaker said. \u201cSo, when I told them I had already decided I wanted to leave, it was a surprise to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cWe talked through it, man,\u201d he added. \u201cI had no doubt in my heart that they would take it well, even though it was a hard conversation to get through. They understood where I was coming from. They still support me. They were the guys I started training with on my very first day, all the way through the start of my UFC career. They were very difficult conversations to have and hard realities to face. But after that last loss, I really felt like I needed to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Malcom Wellmaker<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Now surrounded by a deep roster of training partners competing in UFC and other major organizations, Wellmaker finally believes he has the resources needed to reintroduce himself to a division many once expected him to climb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cEverybody knows ATT is the mecca of building champions and fighting at the highest level,\u201d Wellmaker said. \u201cThe room is incredibly stacked. The practices are really, really intense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cThe biggest difference is the sparring,\u201d he continued. \u201cBack home, I sparred hard, don\u2019t get me wrong, but it\u2019s different here because these guys are really coming for me. They\u2019re putting me in danger, and I feel seriously challenged. At the end of our rounds, I feel real exhaustion. There are real moments of danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">That daily discomfort has restored the confidence that disappeared after his loss to Diaz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cI feel like I\u2019m going to be so much more prepared for that feeling inside the cage,\u201d Wellmaker said. \u201cEvery Tuesday and Thursday when I walk into the gym, I\u2019ve got butterflies. It\u2019s a real-deal experience, man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Wellmaker returns to action this weekend (Sat., Oct. 10, 2026) against <strong>Otari Tanzilovi<\/strong> on UFC Vegas 122\u2019s main card inside Meta Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">And while Wellmaker has spent the past several months expanding his game, don\u2019t expect his new surroundings to produce an entirely different fighter. \u201cThe Machine\u201d is still hunting for the same violent result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _266fr62 _1mt21p09\">\u201cI\u2019m getting that knockout. No matter where I go, what I do, who I am or where I\u2019m at, brother, I\u2019m always going to be the guy trying to get a knockout.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Malcom Wellmaker<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un4 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cCoach Mo [Lawal] told me last week, \u2018I don\u2019t think it\u2019s ever going to change. You\u2019re always going to have a gunslinger style, but we\u2019ve got to work on these other things,\u2019\u201d Wellmaker added. \u201cWhen I get inside that cage, with four-ounce gloves on my hands and a man standing in front of me, I want to put him to sleep.
