Malcolm Wellmaker looked like he was on his way to another victory at UFC Vegas 122 on Saturday night, but Otari Tanzilovi apparently forgot to read the script.

After spending much of the fight getting pressured, dropped, and forced to survive, Tanzilovi decided he’d had enough of playing defense. Out of nowhere, he uncorked a nasty head kick that sent Wellmaker straight to the shadow realm in the second round. One second Wellmaker was hunting for the finish, the next he was the one getting finished.

Welcome to MMA, where being in control means absolutely nothing when somebody decides to introduce your chin to their shin.

Round 1 – Wellmaker came out putting the pressure on Tanzilovi, forcing him to take some chances with his strikes just to create some breathing room. Tanzilovi worked his way around the cage, but Wellmaker did a solid job cutting him off and keeping the pressure on.

It was pretty clear that Wellmaker had the left hook in his game plan, as he kept looking for opportunities to set it up and let it fly. Tanzilovi wasn’t making life easy for him, though, timing a couple of nasty knees up the middle whenever Wellmaker came forward.

Wellmaker started attacking the body, but Tanzilovi was firing back with quick counter combinations. Tanzilovi was putting his punches together nicely, while Wellmaker seemed content throwing single shots. Eventually, Wellmaker connected with a big shot that sent Tanzilovi stumbling back toward the fence.

The speed on Tanzilovi’s strikes was impressive, but the big question was whether he had the gas tank to keep that pace going. Wellmaker eventually caught him with another hard shot that hurt Tanzilovi and sent him down. Tanzilovi desperately shot for a takedown, but Wellmaker took advantage of the position and went to work with some ground and pound.

At that point, Tanzilovi was in full survival mode, desperately looking for a takedown to slow things down. Wellmaker managed to get back to his feet and landed another shot, but Tanzilovi wasn’t going away quietly. He secured a takedown of his own and started landing punches before Wellmaker eventually worked his way back up.

Both fighters exchanged strikes in the closing moments, but Tanzilovi was clearly starting to run on fumes. His speed was still there in flashes, but the pace appeared to be catching up with him as the horn sounded to end the round.

Round 2 – Wellmaker came out in the second round picking up right where he left off, stalking Tanzilovi around the cage and looking to land something heavy. After eating a couple of strikes, Wellmaker fired back with some hard shots of his own. Tanzilovi clearly didn’t like what was coming his way and immediately shot for a takedown, but Wellmaker stuffed it without much trouble.

To his credit, Tanzilovi was doing a solid job putting his strikes together whenever Wellmaker came forward. While Wellmaker was looking for the big shot, Tanzilovi was answering with combinations and doing his best to keep him guessing. Wellmaker managed to get into the clinch briefly, but Tanzilovi broke free and went right back to circling the cage, trying to stay ahead of the pressure.

The two continued trading strikes, with Wellmaker looking to impose his will and Tanzilovi firing back whenever he found an opening.

Then, out of absolutely nowhere, Tanzilovi uncorked a beautiful head kick that connected clean and put Wellmaker out cold. Just like that, the fight was over.

Wellmaker was winning the fight right up until he wasn’t. That’s MMA for you. One second you’re in control, the next you’re staring at the arena lights wondering what the hell happened.

Otai Tanzilovi pulled off a massive knockout victory in just his second UFC appearance, turning what looked like a tough night at the office into the biggest moment of his UFC career so far.
