On a recent episode of Serra’s podcast, the pair landed on the same side of the Jiu-Jitsu gym standards question that keeps dividing the sport — whether a “keep it classy” dress code and a hard training room can coexist. Their answer, “we can still train to be savages,” is the first half of a debate Keith Krikorian is now having from the opposite direction.

What Florian and Serra Actually Said

Near the end of a long conversation, Serra explained why he owns a Jiu-Jitsu school rather than an MMA gym. Teaching wrestling and Muay Thai was never the problem — the clientele was.

You could become a complete martial art if you teach wrestling, Muay Thai. We do everything at my school but it’s a different clientele. You don’t got everybody who wants to be a champ with no money. Guys walking around shirtless. Nobody wants to take their top off at my school.
– Matt Serra –

Florian didn’t hesitate.

We do the same thing. We do the same.
– Kenny Florian –

Serra then summed up the shared standard in two words, and answered the obvious objection before it landed.

Keep it classy.
– Matt Serra –

Florian Martial Arts Center’s Conduct Standards

The Kenny Florian BJJ school in Brookline, Massachusetts, is the Florian Martial Arts Center, and its written standards are not a dress-code rulebook. The code of conduct page is built around a Student Creed — “Every day I will show Gratitude, Humility, Perseverance, Courage and Self-Control” — which students and instructors recite at the end of every class.

Beside the creed sits an etiquette list about the mats and hygiene: shoes off at the door, bare feet only on the mats, clean gear and fingernails, a bow before stepping on or off the mat, and permission before leaving mid-class. None of it is a written “no shirtless” rule. The dress code Florian described on the podcast is a spoken conduct standard, not a line item — which is exactly the distinction his critics tend to miss.

Why Serra Chose a Jiu-Jitsu School Over an MMA Gym

Serra’s reasoning was about the room, not the curriculum. He could have built what he called a complete martial arts school by adding wrestling and Muay Thai, but an MMA gym pulls a different crowd — including, in his words, people who want to be a champ with no money and walk around with their tops off. The Matt Serra gym was a deliberate choice for a clientele that wants the training without that atmosphere.

It is a business argument as much as a cultural one. A Jiu-Jitsu school, in his telling, attracts people who pay for a professional environment — parents, professionals, and hobbyists who never asked to share a lobby with the shirtless register of a fight camp.

“We Can Still Train to Be Savages” — Does a Dress Code Blunt Intensity?

The idea that a BJJ gym dress code and a hard mat can’t share a roof is one the sport keeps rehearsing. The same debate keeps coming up every time a prominent academy sets a standard — the Gordon Ryan academy dress code made headlines, and Tom DeBlass’s rules for visitors drew the identical argument.

Serra and Florian’s answer cuts through the BJJ gym rules debate: the shirtless guys in the lobby were never the thing making anyone a savage. Intensity comes from the rounds, not the wardrobe.

Where’s the Line? Jiu-Jitsu Gym Standards vs. Controlling Adults

The two stories are about different rooms, but they are really the same argument. Florian and Serra are defending standards for the shared training space — how you dress, how you act on the mat, whether the room feels professional. Krikorian is defending the space outside it, arguing that a coach who polices which adults date has stopped running a gym and started running a life.

The line most practitioners can agree on sits between them: Jiu-Jitsu gym standards that govern the mats are reasonable, and rules that reach into consenting adults’ private lives are not. A “keep it classy” dress code and a “no dating your teammates” policy are not the same thing — one sets the tone of the room, the other claims the people in it. For the fuller picture on what belongs in a rulebook, the gym rules conversation has been running for a while.

Source link

Jiu-Jitsu gym standards are back in the spotlight after Kenny Florian and Matt Serra agreed a “keep it classy” dress code doesn’t blunt the training room — “we can still train to be savages.” Florian’s Brookline academy does “the same thing,” he said on Serra’s podcast — a spoken conduct standard, not a written “no

[29
7746,11008,1022,152,11007,1321,1322,15912,9096,3298
post-33114","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-techniques","tag-classy","tag-florian","tag-gym","tag-jiujitsu","tag-kenny","tag-matt","tag-serra","tag-shirtless","tag-standards","tag-students
["GET
