Quillan Salkilld made a major statement in his first UFC main event, submitting Mateusz Gamrot in the opening round at UFC Fight Night 284 on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Salkilld finished Gamrot with a rear-naked choke at 4:25 of Round 1 inside the Meta APEX, handing the Polish lightweight veteran his fifth professional loss. The 26-year-old Australian improved to 13-1 as a pro and 6-0 in the UFC, while Gamrot fell to 26-5.
Gamrot went to his wrestling after Salkilld connected early, but the fight did not follow the expected script from there. Salkilld escaped trouble during grappling exchanges, took Gamrot down himself, advanced to the back, and forced the tap. Official fight statistics credited Salkilld with one takedown, one submission attempt, and 2:02 of control time; Gamrot landed just three significant strikes.
Afterward, Salkilld said he wants a ranked opponent near the top of the lightweight division. The win was his fourth consecutive first-round finish and continued a UFC streak that has moved fast since his 19-second debut victory.

Diego Ferreira won the co-main event over Billy Quarantillo by a clean 30-27 scorecard on all three judges’ cards. Yadier del Valle then stopped Darren Elkins in 35 seconds, ending Elkins’ final UFC appearance with a first-round TKO. Alexia Thainara earned a unanimous decision over former title challenger Amanda Lemos, taking the contest 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27.

Ty Miller stayed unbeaten with a third-round TKO of Billy Ray Goff, stopping him 15 seconds into the frame. The finish came after a hard fight and pushed Miller’s record to 8-0.

The preliminary card had plenty of quick endings. Diyar Nurgozhay stopped Bruno Lopes with one second left in Round 1, while Jose Montanha submitted Louie Sutherland with a rear-naked choke at 1:50. Miles Johns stopped Gianni Vazquez in the first round, and Juliana Miller submitted Ravena Oliveira in Round 2.
