With a new champion set to be crowned next month, Casey O’Neill and Eduarda Moura threw down in women’s flyweight action at UFC 331.
O’Neill had won two straight to start the night, while Moura was coming off a loss to Wang Cong, who is set to fight for gold in October at UFC 332.
Round 1: Moura came out looking to land immediately, cracking O’Neill with a big straight right hand that sat her down seconds in. She quickly jumped on top and settled in half guard, landing some nice elbows while shifting to side control. O’Neill fought the transition well and held the wrist of Moura to prevent incoming ground attacks. After shifting to north-south, Moura wrapped up an anaconda choke as O’Neill reversed to her stomach.
Despite the choke looking tight, O’Neill prevailed and escaped to bottom full guard. From there, she pulled off something never seen before in the UFC. She kicked off Moura’s hips with full power from the bottom while pulling her up, sending Moura launching upside down in the air. As she came back down from being launched, O’Neill snatched her arm and got an instant tap from the armbar. It was an indescribable finish, and one you must see for yourself. Shades of Demetrious Johnson’s “Mighty Wiz Bar,” but unique.
