Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and ADCC silver medalist AJ Agazarm was arrested in California this week on suspicion of burglary, according to publicly available arrest information.
Public arrest information lists Agazarm, 39, of Atascadero, California, as having been arrested on September 22, 2026, in Ventura County. The listed arresting agency is the Ventura County Sheriff, while the alleged offense is identified as California Penal Code 459 – Burglary.
The publicly available arrest record does not currently provide further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the alleged offense, including the location of the alleged incident or what specifically led to Agazarm’s arrest. No bail amount or release date is currently listed.
It is important to emphasize that an arrest is not a conviction. Agazarm has been arrested on suspicion of the listed offense and is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
Video Purportedly Connected to the Alleged Incident Circulates Online
Following reports of Agazarm’s arrest, the Train Angry MMA Instagram account published video footage that the account presents as being connected to the alleged incident involving Agazarm.
At this time, BJJEE has not independently verified the origin, date, complete context or circumstances of the footage, nor has law enforcement publicly confirmed that the video depicts the conduct underlying the burglary allegation. For that reason, the footage should be regarded as purported footage of the alleged incident rather than independent proof that a crime occurred.
One of the Most Recognizable American Grapplers of His Generation
Agazarm has been a prominent figure in competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling for more than a decade.
One of the biggest achievements of his career came at the 2017 ADCC Submission Fighting World Championship, where he earned the silver medal in the -66 kg division.
Agazarm is also a former IBJJF World No-Gi black belt champion, winning the title in 2014. His competitive résumé also includes a Pan American No-Gi title, Brazilian National No-Gi title, European No-Gi titles and numerous medals at major international tournaments.
A former NCAA Division I wrestler at Ohio State University, Agazarm received his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt in 2013 under Eduardo de Lima and Carlos Gracie Jr. His combination of wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu helped make him one of the better-known American competitors of his generation.
Separate Family Court Case Appears in Public Court Records
A California court record circulating online also appears to show an open San Luis Obispo family-court case involving AJ Agazarm III. The displayed court information categorizes the matter as Family and lists the case type as Domestic Violence.
A social-media post accompanying the court screenshot states that a hearing concerning a restraining order and relinquishment of firearms is scheduled for September 29, 2026.
However, BJJEE has not established that the family-court proceeding is connected to Agazarm’s September 22 arrest in Ventura County. The court screenshot by itself does not establish the underlying allegations, the identity of the other party, or any finding of wrongdoing. The two matters therefore should not be assumed to be connected unless additional court or law-enforcement records establish such a connection.
Details Surrounding Arrest Remain Limited
As of publication, publicly available information concerning the Ventura County arrest remains limited. The arrest record identifies Agazarm, the date of arrest, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and the suspected violation of California Penal Code 459, but does not provide a detailed account of the circumstances leading to the arrest.
BJJEE will update this report if additional verified information becomes available through law-enforcement records, court filings, prosecutors, Agazarm or his representatives.
AJ Agazarm is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
