Jai Herbert isn’t getting caught up in the co-main event label at UFC Vegas 122.
He’s coming off a win, feeling good and looking to keep that momentum rolling against Matheus Camilo, a talented young fighter Herbert respects but fully intends on reminding that there are levels to this game.
“Great win in April. Just really excited to get back in there, momentum you know, get some good wins under my belt now,” Herbert told reporters on Wednesday.
“Just really excited to fight again because I really enjoyed the last fight especially being in front of the crowd. I know it’s at the APEX now, it’s a bit smaller, but it’s more intense which is exciting as well so I’m excited to do that.”
Herbert appreciates getting the co-main event spot, but he’s not about to spend fight week staring at the poster and admiring where his name is. Once that cage door closes, all the extra stuff goes out the window anyway, and the only thing that matters is beating the dude standing across from him.
“Yeah when people say, ‘oh you co-main event’ yeah that’s great, but I try not to think much into that. Co-main event yeah it’s great, it’s a great opportunity the UFC give me, but ultimately it’s all about the fight,” he said.
“Everything else is just ice on the cake really, but when I get in there that’s all that matters.”
Herbert knows Camilo is young, hungry and dangerous pretty much everywhere, but he’s also seen plenty of guys like that during his career. The youngster might have the tools, but Herbert believes experience is where he holds the advantage, and he plans on making that difference pretty clear on Saturday night.
“He’s a young up and coming lad. He’s a good fighter, good all around, he can box, he can wrestle. He’s a good fighter,” said Herbert.
“So it’s going to be a good fight, but I’ve got the experience, I’ve got the skills, I’ve got everything man to go out there and get the win. That’s what I’m going to do.”
