Some have already decided on how they feel about Josh Hokit, but Chael Sonnen thinks it’s too early to pass judgment.
Hokit has emerged in the UFC heavyweight division thanks to his polarizing personality and memorable performances against Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis. “The Incredible Hok” has earned his first world title shot, and it’ll take place at UFC 334. Hokit will challenge Ciryl Gane for the UFC Heavyweight Championship at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 12.
Some have been dismissive of Hokit due to his over-the-top gimmick and controversial comments, such as calling Michelle Obama a “man” during the UFC Freedom 250 broadcast. Sonnen thinks the detractors should pump the brakes. He told Mike Bohn of MMAJunkie.com that Hokit’s story is developing.
“Josh Hokit is in the process of telling a story, and this story is going to take probably another year to come out,” Sonnen said. “Before you pass any judgement of Josh Hokit that you want to disguise in broken up clips that were 45 seconds or less then you try to piece them all together, his story is going to take about another year. Let him finish. He’s painting this masterpiece. Let him get it done and then pass judgement. The greats take a little while. He’s getting warmed up. He’s going somewhere with all of this. Just stand by.”
Sonnen was known for his bravado on the mic during his days as a prizefighter. His personal digs at UFC legend Anderson Silva and the Brazilian fanbase made “The American Gangster” a heel to some, but a funny personality to others. While Sonnen has made peace with some of his past foes, he isn’t shy in ruffling some feathers even today.
Many have compared Hokit to Sonnen for the pro wrestling-inspired mic work. Whether or not Hokit can maximize his opportunity by capturing UFC gold will be determined in New York City. If Hokit pulls off the upset win over Gane, the UFC brass might start to see the dollar signs that Sonnen is anticipating.
