Thirteen fights, and only one went the distance. Just looking at the numbers, it was clear there was going to be some big money handed out in terms of Performance of the Night bonuses at UFC Edmonton.
That did turn out to be the case. In lieu of a Fight of the Night, four Performance bonuses were awarded following Saturday’s Fight Night card at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. And there was no surprise that headliner Mike Malott was first and foremost among them.
Against Joaquin Buckley, a contender with considerably more UFC experience, Canada’s Malott fired a few naked head kicks early, that were seemingly blocked with ease. Then came a kick that seemed to target Buckley a bit lower, or more accurately a knee that may have started life as a kick. It connected as he came in, ever so slightly dipped, and caught him flush. Mouthpiece went sailing. Buckley went crashing down. A single follow-up punch landed before the ref could make the save, but the outcome was set in stone the instant that knee connected.
Malott takes home $100,000 for his efforts. He’s also poised to make another big leap forward, into the welterweight top 10.
Heavyweight newcomer Joel Faglier, TriStar product Mandel Nallo, and Canadian middleweight Marc-Andre Barriault collected the other three performance bonuses at UFC Edmonton. With only Jasudavicius vs. Blanchfield going the distance, the remaining eight finishers pocketed $25,000 bonuses for their stoppages.
