Andre Galvao and Rousimar Palhares will meet again more than a decade after their ADCC final, this time under Combat Jiu-Jitsu rules.
The two will headline ACBJJ 23 on November 13 at Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro, according to sources.
Their first meeting was the 2011 ADCC final in the under-194 lbs (88 kg) division in Nottingham, England, which Galvao won 9-4.
The rematch will be at 220 lbs (100 kg).
Former UFC competitor and event promoter Davi Ramos explained the format:
Combat Jiu-Jitsu allows punches and kicks to the body, but strikes to the head are prohibited.
The rounds are scored using the 10-9 system, with three criteria taken into account: impact, control, and aggression.
Palhares is regarded as one of the most dangerous heel hook specialists in grappling and MMA, and UFC heavyweight Valter Walker has named him a major influence.
In his UFC run from 2008 to 2013, he fought at middleweight and welterweight and went 8-4 in 12 appearances, with four wins by heel hook.
The UFC released him after multiple incidents of holding submissions once referees had signaled him to let go.
That history has made it hard for him to land high-profile grappling supermatches, which adds weight to this booking.
Galvao, the founder of Atos, went 5-2 in MMA before turning to grappling competition and coaching.
He has faced allegations of se*ual assault and misconduct from former Atos student Alexa Herse, who accused him of inappropriate touching and comments during training.
Galvao denied them and called them false rumors. The controversy led several prominent athletes and affiliated gyms to distance themselves from Atos.
