The co-main event of Saturday’s UFC Vegas 122 found England’s Jai Herbert taking on Brazilian Matheus Camilo in lightweight action.
38-year old Herbert, “The Black Country Banger,” entered off a victory over Mandel Nallo in Canada (coincidentally, the UFC returns to the north next week), while Camilo had won two straight bouts after dropping his promotional debut opposite Gabe Green.
To start the opening frame, Herbert marched forward pressing Camilo’s back to the fence behind a solid jab. Camilo returned a low leg kick, as Herbert bounced in and out of range. Herbert landed a solid right straight that snapped the head back of Camilo and forced him to circle away. Camilo crashed forward with a big overhand right that clipped the top of Herbert’s head, landing a takedown as well moments later. Camilo fought back well in the final minute to possibly steal the round.
After a highly competitive first, Camilo was now the fighter moving forward, as Herbert fought from the outside behind his jab. Midway through the round Camilo was able to secure a bodylock takedown, dragging Herbert to the floor. Transitioning to back control, Camillo was looking to find a submission. Herbert was able to scramble his way out of danger, reversing position to end up on top. Herbert started to throw big ground and pound from full guard, where he remained for the rest of the round.
Camilo’s coach Erik Nicksick told his fighter that it was 1-1 in between rounds. This was an extremely hard fight to score through two rounds. Both fighters met in the center of the cage to start the third with Camilo landing a significant left hood upstairs in the opening minute. Herbert connected on a solid kick to the body as Camilo was moving forward. Herbert began to walk down Camilo, who seemed to be wearing down. Camilo was able to respond forcing he fight into the clinch then against the cage.
Both fighters separated with a minute and a half remaining in the fight. Herbert was able to defend a takedown from Camilo, ending up on top in full guard. Herbert postured up landing some solid ground and pound before letting Camilo return to his feet. Camilo tried for another takedown but again was unable to get the fight down.
After fifteen minutes all three judges scored the fight 29-28 for Jai Herbert in a very competitive contest. Herbert stated that he wants to stay active, hopefully fighting again early in 2027.
Official Result: Jai Herbert def. Matheus Camilo by unanimous decision (29–28, 29–28, 29–28)
