A planned strawweight fight between Lupita “Loopy” Godinez and Ketlen Souza on the UFC Vegas 122 main card was thrown for a bit of a “loop” when Souza missed weight.
With the miss being just a pound, the main question would be how drained the Brazilian would be from her weight cut.
Godinez looked to punch her way into a takedown early, but didn’t have it, with the pair both active and light on the feet. Souza fired a spinning back fist near the midway mark of a round where both women had their moments. As time ticked away, Souza began to get her timing more, ducking punches and just missing with a big left hand. Little respect for Godinez’s own power was shown as she simply wore the punches that did land. Godinez was soon bloodied, and looked for another entry for a takedown, only to pull out of it.
At the end of the round, Loopy briefly dumped Godinez, but she scrambled back up immediately. When Godinez caught a kick, Souza showed impressive balance, hopping on one leg while still letting punches fly.
The blood continued to leak from Godinez’s nose as she waited for the second round to get underway. So far, Souza’s weight cut didn’t seem to be dogging her, and she had a clear power advantage over Loopy. Souza’s attacks continued, with Godinez finding no success on the takedown front and appearing out-gunned on the feet. That changed when a wild overhand right connected to the side of Souza’s head, but again, Ketlen simply ate it. And when they finally hit the ground, ever so briefly, it was after Souza had stuffed a takedown and reversed. Back up, and Godinez had her back to the fence.
Round three found Loopy Godinez seeming to need a hot start. Instead, it was Souza opening hot, firing punches and elbows at center. Godinez did get a takedown just over a minute in, going to work from guard. Godinez did get to work on top, with Souza unable to create space or scramble back up. Yet at the same time, Loopy didn’t seem to have much gas left in the tank. Souza kicked her off with just seconds remaining, taking them to the final horn.
Loopy had easily won the third round, and Souza the second. It came down to the first, with the judges awarding it to Godinez.
Official Result: Loopy Godinez def. Ketlen Souza by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
